Last week I posted some thoughts in response to a public lecture given by Rabbi Reuvain Mendlowitz regarding Ksav Chabad (the Alter Rebbe's ksav). I felt he did not represent the issue fairly, and since I had received questions about it from a number of people I felt it made sense to write a general response. After I posted my response on this forum, Rabbi Mendlowitz reached out to me by email and we ended up having a respectful and productive email exchange regarding the relevant issues surrounding Ksav Chabad. His position is a lot clearer to me now, and I think he also took certain things on board that I clarified with him. The purpose of the Stam Forum (at least back in it's heyday before all the whats app groups took over) was to connect sofrim from around the world, to promote achdus and build bridges, as well as to offer support and advice. In that spirit, I felt I should write a follow up post, to clarify some of the issues and misconception...
according Radach it is defintly chok tochos [I think the keset hasofer is machmir at least lechatchila], but in the hai mentioned others may also machmir since the left foot was finished as a pasul it must be totaly erased, but the gag may be left because the right part of the hay wasn't finished. (If I remember correctly, there is a chatam sofer speaking about this ?)
ReplyDeleteIf it is nogeya I can search the chatam sofer.
Once you erase the left regel and all you have is a gag there is no tzuros ha-ois so why would you have to also erased that?
Deletecorrect !!
DeleteIf you could post the Chasam Sofer I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Deletedoes this apply if i first wrote the bottom part of the left regel, and afterwards added the top part (and rounding out the left side), and that's when it connected to the gag (ksav ari), is it clear what i'm saying?
DeleteIf the hay was written backwards - first the left foot then the gag, so the negiya occurred while making the gag. If so the gag was written bi'pisul - and in this case the gag [and not the left foot] must be erased.
Deleteno, i'm sorry i wasn't clear enough. first i wrote the gag then the bottom port of the left regel then the top part of the left regel
DeleteIf so as explained above only the left foot should be erased, the gag is OK.
