My Yeshiva had dedicated a new Sefer Torah in memory of Rabbi Sam Menlo ( Of Blessed Memory)  a major founder of the yeshiva. One of my Rabbeim asked if I wanted to fill in a letter for the event and I asked my friend there to take a video of me filling in the letter.  I was so nervous I accidentally said "Kosev" instead of "Kotev" (Although does not make a difference after the fact) 

לנו"ן אין מושב מתפשט מהצואר לשמאלה, אלא רק שהצואר משופע כלפי מטה [כעין משולש]. זה פסול [וגרע מדין גולם ביוד"י האל"ף וכדומה], וק"ו מגולם ראש הנו"ן שהוא פסול, ואין לו תיקון בתפלין ומזוזה שלא כסדרן.

הדין במקרה זה: אם ניכר לעין שיש כאן שתי אותיות, אי אפשר לתקן בתו"מ שלא כסדרן. ואם ספק אזי מועיל קריאת התינוק, ואם קוראו צ' - מותר לתקן בתו"מ. בנוגע לכתב האר"י - היות שהצ' אינו דומה כל כך לנו"ן [בכתב זה] ויו"ד, משום שהנו"ן כפופה מאוד, והיו"ד הפוכה, יש מקילים. למעשה אין למהר ולהקל כל כך, אלא רק אם ספק מה הצורה שלפנינו.  לפי התמונה הנראית כאן  - זה נראה יותר כאות צ'. היות שההבחנה במקרים אלו גבולית, קשה לסמוך על תמונה בסקן להחליט הדבר [אע"פ שבמקרה שלפנינו היות שהכתב  קטן  יותר מהתמונה, כמעט ברור שמסקנת הרואה במציאות תהא זהה לרואה בסקן]. ראה גם:  https://hebrewstam.blogspot.com/2018/08/blog-post_16.html

Any stores that have them in stock? I prefer a hardcopy since I can learn the Sefer over Shabbat.

Today I was talking to a respected rabbi I am friendly with,  who is currently researching the concept of the GR"A  megillah. He sent me a photo of a page from the Ma’aseh Rav of the Gra, Weinreb edition, and noted  that the Likutim on the side begin the discussion quoting the Tosefes Ma’aseh Rav written by R’ Eliezer Landau, great grandson of the Gra, re the need for Amudim ( Atzei Chayim equivalent) on the Megillah. He noted that what seems to emerge is one of two approaches: A) either the Gra insisted on 2 Amudim, like a Sefer Torah; rejecting the concept of Igeres... B) Insisting on at least 1 Amud which would achieve both; Having an Amud and at the same time differentiating the Megillah as an igeres from a Sefer Torah and other Sifrei Nevi’im. This Shita in the Gra is expressed by R’ Naftali Hertz who as a Talmid of R Yehoshua Leib Diskin was sent to Yafo to hold the religious fort there in the late 1800’s/ early 1900’s. He was a Mekubal apparently. He published one

1. Where do Soferim normally get כתב קבלה?  I know of different certification organizations in New York and Israel but I am unsure exactly where they are located.  2. What material/knowledge is tested on the test for כתב קבלה? Already learned קסת הסופר, שלחן ערוך סימנים לב לג לו, small amounts of מקדש מעט and דעת קודשים. 2a. What other ספרים should I learn? 3. Is there any minimum age requirement? 4. Any difference between getting כתב קבלה between ספרדי כתב and כתב אשכנזי? I know how to write either כתב, preferably ספרדי כתב. Another sheila I received via email to post on the forum by one of our members: what are the internal dimensions of the Starik bottim in the 28, 30, and 32mm sizes ? I’m looking to get replacement bottim for a pair of yerushoh tefillin, but I don’t have access to these numbers

I explained the view of the mikdash maat that this gimel is posel רואין אותו כאילו נתמלאה דיו All know the magen avraham that this aleph is kosher(either with or without scratching) Rabbi Lindner posted the shaila on vav. We need to understand the difference of these two halachos to be able to rule on the vav.

And now the Nun of Nafshechem... How serious would you say this is?...

(Of course, I am not trying to put down this Sofer Stam in any way) I want to know if the Beis's protrusion is good because many of them have very small ones... Also, how long should the protrusion be in order to be kosher?

What is your opinions on this Vav of Ve'ahavta? Is this a Sha'ala of possibly looking like a Zayin?...

ב׳׳ה On the Stringency of writing Megillas Esther, the beginnings of Safrus from Ezra hasofer, ksav Ashuris, ksiva tama, the 70 languages and on sirtut The Berditchever writes at length his view on ksav Asuris etc, in his Kedusha Shniya on Purim. As you’ll see below. The first part(kidusha rishona), concerning the stringency of megilla, does not have to do with  סת״ם  as much as comparing it to Sefer Torah, in general. The later points have more to do with  סת״ם  itself. Nonetheless, I trust this first part will still be of interest to the sofrim. Permission for use of the pictures of the text was given by the  מו״ל  of this edition (who happens to be a descendant of the Berditchever!) The stringency we find by Megillas Esther over a sefer Torah.  There is a stronger obligation to read the megilla than there is a to read the Torah. Yet the Torah is from Moshe from Sinai while the Megilla is only written  ברוח  הקודש  by Mordechai and Esther. Even though it is an

I received an email from one of our members with the following sheila: A relative who does not purchase leather in his normal life asked me to help him buy a used pair of tefillin for his son's bar mitzva next year, with the logic that this is a more palatable option for him.  Leaving aside whether this makes sense, does anyone have advise for where to start looking for a used pair of tefillin in Jerusalem, and any other tips for making sure he gets a kosher set? 

התי"ו  פסולה, אין לה צורת אות, ולא שיעור אות. כי הגג עבה כל כך, וא"כ אין לרגליה שיעור מלוא אות קטנה. וזה מעכב. אי אפשר לתקנה [בתו"מ] בגרירת החלל משום חק תוכות. עוק צ י הוי"ו  - גסים מדי, ואינם נכונים לכתחילה. אלא  צ "ל להוי"ו עוקץ דק דוקא, ולא עוקץ שהוא כמו ראש על גבי ראש וכדומה.

הגימ"ל הראשון [גבלך] אין לה ראש אמיתי. אמנם יש בה בליטה הניכרת, אך עיקר ראשה שוה לירכה, ואין זה נחשב לראש העובר על הירך, כפי שמבואר בב"י שראש הג' כזיי"ן שצ"ל עובר על הירך היטב (גם העושים צורת ראשה כוי"ו, אינם חולקים על פרט זה שצ"ל הראש עובר היטב). ולכן חייב לתקנה [ואני חושש לפסלה עד התיקון משום חסר ראש, ושינוי צורתה]

המ"ם סתומה בשורה התחתונה עגולה למטה משתי צידיה: לדעת המקדש מעט היא פסולה, כי חסר בה עיקר צורת המ"ם, שצ"ל מרובעת, וזו אינה מרובעת בפינותיה. אמנם, לדעת שו"ע אדמו"ר הזקן [סי' לו את מ' פתוחה] מוכח שעיקר צורתה אינה בפינותיה לבדן, אלא בכללות צורת גופה. ולכן דין מ"ם זו שאלת תינוק. ואם יקראנה התינוק מ"ם, יש לתקן את פינותיה. מושב המ"ם צ"ל שטוחה ישרה, ולא עקומה. מ"מ בדיעבד, נראה שכל שתינוק מכירה עדיין כשרה.

Anyone knows any suppliers in the USA? I know of a store called Mercaz Hasoferim that had a website, but their website is down for a while now. I also know of Beis HaStam in Borough Park (Rabbi Traube who is on the forum) but I am unsure if they allow orders over the phone or online Michael Arashebn

Can it be assumed that any off-cuts of parchment prior to it being ruled and cut to size (i.e. to write a sefer Torah etc), has been made with a tnai and can be used for "anything" as long as its not tashmish gnaiy? For example, can i use it to a make artworks? Can I practice writing on it prior to write a mezuzah etc? Can I have bar mitzvah boys (as part of a class) try writing on it? Many thanks
