I have a PDF including 39 brief psakim of Rabbi Zalman Shimon on sta"m, put out by
איגוד כותבי סת"ם קראון הייטס, תשמ"ה
Since I can't (or don't know how to) download a PDF file on this site, anybody interested in this file, I will happily mail.

ReplyDeleteThe Psak number 38 is different than how was written in the forum in this post. Seemingly majority Rabbonim do require a bracha if it is over night. To bad there are no marei makomos or svaros written in thee piskei halachos.

Dovid I didn't understand what is written there different from the post? please clarify
DeleteFrom that post mentioned all the sources say that one makes a bracha if the mezuza is down overnight since it is a complete hesach hadas, from this Kovetz one need not make a bracha if it is only one night down.
DeleteThanks
DeleteR" Moshe,
DeleteWhat is the proper response Halacha Lemasay to answer a Lubavitcher if the mezuza is down over night if they need to make a new blessing?
I do not mind telling them what is written here in the name of RZASH, however it does not give the nimuk or makor plus the majority opinions differ?
The custom here in Eretz Yisrael is like posted there, that if a night passes one must make a bracha. I don't know of any special Lubavitch minhag in this regard.
DeleteBut if one wants to be choishesh to R. Zalman Shimon's opinion (not to make a bracha even if a night passses) I can understand this.
I don't know when is considered the time limit -after that - that one must make a bracha.
I juast received the email from Reb Moshe, while I have heard of most of these psakim in RZ"S's name ive never seen it in print.
ReplyDeleteTwo comments, questions:
1) Does the Agudas Kosvei Stam Anash D' Crown Heights exist anymore? If not, why not? If yes, who is behind it?
2) In the first halacha Reb Zalman Shimon write clearly that a short lamed is not mehudar (but obviously kosher). Reb Zalman Shimon was the rov of Crown Heights for many years and Rabbi E. Zirkind Shlita has been the sofer of 770 for many years. Yet I find it interesting that while Rabbi Zirkind does not hold of the whole concept of Mehudar or Lechatchillah, (he says either something is kosher k'din or not), its obvious that Reb Zalman Shimon did hold of kosher mehudar and kosher but not mehudar.
Interesting.
Agudas Kosvei Stam Anash D' Crown Heights does officaly exsit (altugh not very active), evry moitzai shabbos r' zirkind gives a shiur which is officaly a weekly meeting of the igud.
Deleteat the shiur thay learn שו"ע,צ"צ and disscus curent shaylos r' klapman wrote down all the diffrent psakim over the years and the piskay halochos of r' zalmen shimon is taken from klapmen's notes.
That there is no such thing as gedarim of mehudar or lechatchillah kosher, only blanket kosher, to me, is a major chiddush.
DeleteI have been in the business for 18 years and spoken with dozens of poskim and never heard of such a concept.
Rav Blau in Chovas hadar and Rav Ovadia pasken that if the mezuzah is down a few hours a new bracha is made. The psak I received from a few major poskim is that if the mezuzah is down overnight a new bracha is made. One of these poskim told me that since it is a safek bracha if it hasn't been down overnight that a bracha should then only be made if down overnight.
ReplyDeleteDo you have any mareh mekomos for Rav Ovadya's psak?
DeleteI am traveling now through Eretz Yisrael and don't have access to the Mare Mekomot of R. Ovadya.
DeleteIf memory serves right, he holds like R. Akiva Eiger - that once a mezuzah is brought down to check, we must make a berakha upon reafixing it, no matter the time elapsed.
The resoning is that most people wanting to check a mezuzah, do so because they DO NOT KNOW if it is kosher or passul, and want to find out.
As such, it is impossible to have DAAT that one is going to attach the same mezuzah.
This is a great chiluk from those poskim who equate taking off a mezuzah to that of taking off a Tallit. In the case of the Tallit there is certainty that one will put the same tallit back again in a few minutes. This is not the case by a mezuzah.
Therefore the custom among Sepharadim is to always say a berakha when reattaching a mezuzah that was brought down for checking no matter the time elapsed.
However, if it was brought down for a different purpose; say clean the frame or polish the silver casing; then no berakha would be required if reattached on the same day.
