Decorating a megillah
Hi all,
Someone brought me a megillah to decorate the sides and top margins with designs and illustrations. i know that this is done in megillos but wouldnt this be a problem of "marking" kisvei kodesh which is certainly problematic in other areas of stam. Why is it accepted by megillah and not other kisvei kodesh in stam...

The following shailo I once discussed with R' Shammai it's definitely similar if not what you are asking...
ReplyDeleteShailo: Klaf that was made for STaM that was not made with a tanai (the kavana being that it's for Sefer Torah however can be used for Tefillin, Mezuzos, Megillas, etc.) What is the din in a case when writing a megillah that one wants to add pictures to as well (like many are nohag.) Would it be a problem in this case since the klaf was originally intended for Sefer Torah and only because one has the ability to change to anything he wants then he may only write a megillah and not the pictures. Or since this is part of the megillah (that one writes the pictures) that he may then also in this case (even though perhaps the kedushas was a little bit more.)
Teshuva: I was at first in sofek about this over the tzadidim mentioned in the shailo. That since the kedusha is really more maybe it's ossur or since this is part of the megillah then it should be muter. However l'maskana since one could ask b'clal why is it muter to draw these pictures even by a megillah itself and l'maseh that's muter, so to here since one is allowed to write the megillah and these pictures are also muter then even in such a case it's also muter.
On a different occasion I heard R' Shammai discussing this shailo with a Sofer and he said in such a case lichatchila tzuros should not be made. On another occasion I heard him speaking to a Sofer on the phone and seemed to be then unsure and wanted to see what he had written down about the shailo (if I remember correctly.)
So I'll admit the l'maskana it's a bit difficult to work out what he held. I believe though he overall is makil -- I'll bli neder ask again. If someone would ask me I'd be makil.
Update: Tonight I discussed this with R' Shammai again and he said l'maseh one can be makil. (I mentioned that I had written down conflicting teshuvas but said l'maseh can be makil.)
ReplyDeleteIts says clearly in the Keset Hasofer that one should not do this, but it doesnt pasul them. There is not reason to do this.
