Osios with lines coming out

Today I saw a Mem-Stumah that looked perfectly fine aside from the fact that it had a small line coming out from the bottom right corner (not so small - or thin - either.) While I wouldn't say the Mem looked now like a different ois or that there was a shinui in the tzurah still it didn't "look" right. You could see clearly the Mem-Stumah, however there was this line coming out also. On other oisios (or this ois) when could this be a problem? What can be said about this? Until what point do we say there is no shinui tzurah? Although I don't have an example on hand at the moment perhaps if R' Moshe or someone else has one and could be posted that would be good. Hopefully I'm being clear in this.

  1. See R' Moshe's post above. But I believe this is a chassidishe mesorah to make sure the corner is extra pointy. In fact, when I was taught, I was taught to make a line slightly longer on the bottom left corner to ensure pointiness. Granted, when done right it is barely noticeable if at all.

  2. It may be a reminder of what it says in Sefer HaTagin - where it says that 103 times in the Torah the mem sofit is not joined and has three tagin on it. In both Machzor Vitri and Ginsburg this is interpreted as having two tagin on the gag and one line coming out of the left bottom corner. The line may well be a tradition that started there but now all the three tagin are shown on the gag as in R. Moshe's post above but the line is till there.
