all black retzuos

Someone told me that Rav Vozner in NY (I'm not sure if it was Rav BZ Vozner or Rav Vozner from the Mishmeres STaM) that he said they were "karov lepasul". Can anyone confirm this and explain it? While I'm aware some don't like it because we don't have a mesorah for it (It's easy to make yet we never did) I'm not aware of any reason that it would be pasul. In addition, Rav MS Klein himself (Rav Shmuel Vozner's close talmid) holds its mehudar, in addition to Rav Friedlander, Rav Shternuch (the Edah) and Rav Landau and Rav Friedlander told me that Rav Elyashiv didn't have an issue with it (in order to ensure kosher/lechatchila retzuos).

  1. I would question the validity when "someone says that someone said...". Rav Vozner of Vaad Mishmeres Stam is easily accesible @ (845) 371-5666.

  5. In the beginning when it first came out, some poskim were not enthusiastic because they did not know enough about it and the concept took time to warm up. It's possible that what you heard was from the early days....

  6. I have heard (not in the name of Rav Vosner) that often times the dye-job is poor and the retzuos under the shiny paint are actually gray and not black, but since there is not the same contrast as with white retzuos, this will often go unnoticed and unpainted.

  7. Avi,

While this is true, it's just as kosher as if it were black or "white". The issue not only that it will go unnoticed but that people will mistakenly think its black and therefore won't paint it. The leather of Shimborsky's "white" retzuos used to be a grey color and it wasn't so easy to notice that black was missing.

  8. I heard a Shiur delivered by Rav BZ Wosner in Karlin Stolin-Boro Park a few years ago. Rav BZ expressed his dissatisfaction with the double black retzuos, however he stopped short of using posul or koruv lipsul. After the shiur I approached him and said "your father in the tshuva seems to be very happy with the double black retzuos" His answer "יפה כח הבן מכח האב"

  10. and what was his issue? Since there doesn't seem to be any halachic reason, was it due to lack of mesorah?

  11. There is a strong sentiment that since its perfectly easy to do, but yet none of the great poskim suggested it that this indicates that we ought not do it.
