Several Recent Findings...
Here are four issues found in a recent pair of tefillin.
1) white substance on some letters, probably from klaf when rolled up inside the batim.
2) Lamed of לאמר
3) The left zayin originally had no tagim. As the tag was added, this was done.
4) Mem of אתם

You might be able to salvage the two zayins which are questionably touching since it came after ksivah (sfek sfaika)

DeleteIf you look in ksivah tama pg 188 he makes a distinct difference between a strong connection (at the tops of the tagin) and a dubious one (in his words kav dak - exactly our case, or truth be said our case is better because it looks like a complete nifsak at normal size, only when you blow it up you see there is a kav dak). The tzad to be meikel is based on the Marsham and minchos yitzchok (see footnote 4). And if he is saying there is "mokom lehakel" in a regular case, surely there is tzad to be meikel in our case, where you have a tziruf because the "negiya" came after the writing (Sma"k). Hence in my opinion a definite sfek sfaika.
DeleteObviously a posek would have to sign off on the above before fixing. And it would certainly not be mehudar. But these are not exactly mehudar parshiyos.

According to R' Akiva Eiger, even the Sma"k concurs that if the letter transformed into another letter - it's unfixable (even though it took place l'achar ha'ksiva).
See above, I answered Ahron first. Again, it's a svorah. A posek would need to make the call.

The last Nun can be extended on the bottom and should all be lechatchila.
ReplyDeletewhat's stuck on the letters can be removed with erasing or scraping. Obviously care must be taken not to remove the ink underneath. If not removed then those areas are considered as if the ink is missing and must be judged accordingly.
The other 3 shailas are all serious and deserve the attention of a chacham.
