Baruch Dayan Ho'emes
It is with great shock and sadness that I wish to share the news of the untimely passing of Harav Hagoan R' Mordechai Friedlander, one of the top Rabbonim in Sta"m and Moreh Tzedek of the Vaad Mishmeres Stam ( Yerushalayim) and Badatz Eida Hacharedis.
Besides for being a giant posek and a top class Moreh Horoeh, Rav Friedlander had the ability to connect to thousands of talmidim with his approachable and warm demeanour, and his fluency in Hebrew, Yiddish and English meant that sofrim from all nationalities and backgrounds were able to have a shprach with him. He was often quoted on this forum.
This is an enormous loss for us all and he will be greatly missed by the Sta"m community. We wish his family much comfort and Besuros Tovos to all.

ReplyDeleteHe was at shul Friday morning and was suddenly niftar not long after returning home. Apparently he wasn't feel so well already on Thursday, from what one of his avreichim told me but nothing that he thought required urgent medical attention. The levaya and hespeidim started at his shul in Ramat Shlomo which included the Gaavad and Raavad of the Edah. They stopped at Zvhil for more hespeidim and continuted to the kvura on Har Hazeisim.
ReplyDeleteSome are saying he was in his mid 60's. I had a close kesher with him for 28 years and while I never thought of finding out his age I'm quite certain he was in his early-mid 70s.
He was a chasuv magid shiur in Boropark before moving to Israel some 30+ years ago. He had a morning halachah kollel in Telzstone for at least 30 years where he gave shiur regularly and a shmuz on Thursdays. His kollel was housed in Yeshiva Neveh Zion in Telzstone for many years and he was known as the "posek". He touched the lives of many of the students, avreichim, staff and their families and other locals and answered their shailahs and gave advice and counseling. He later moved his kollel down the street when his very close talmid opened yeshivas Ohr Chadash,a yeshiva for chutnzik boys that included training in carpentry, etc. and also served as rosh yeshiva until the yeshiva closed a few years ago and remained there with his morning kollel. He was also the bochen for the Mishmeres STaM in Yerushalayim and for many years had set hours a number of days a week to answer shailas in STaM in their Geula office. For the past 10 years he was the rav of Shomrei Hachomos in Ramat Shlomo and a mot'z of the Eidah Hachareidis. He had hours to answer shailahs in Ramat Shlomo and had set hours a few times a week at a few Beis horaahs in Geula dedicated to shailahs in STaM and gave occasional shiurim.
He was involved with STaM matters on behalf of the Edah. Also, as a leading expert, fluent in 3 languages and accessible, he was sought out by many, whether it be a sofer with a shailah to major issues that came up from time to time.
In his tight schedule He found time throughout the day outside of his official schedule to meet with people in person and by phone to answer shailahs, give advice and provide counseling. He also raised funds to help many people in need. He took time out of his precious schedule to come to simchas in Yerushalayim to wish a personal mazal tov to many of those who were close with him.

ReplyDeleteHe was in his 70's. The articles are incorrect. As someone mentioned, his father was killed in the Holocaust so he couldn't have been in his 60's.
