Used pair of tefillin

I received an email from one of our members with the following sheila:


A relative who does not purchase leather in his normal life asked me to help him buy a used pair of tefillin for his son's bar mitzva next year, with the logic that this is a more palatable option for him. 
Leaving aside whether this makes sense, does anyone have advise for where to start looking for a used pair of tefillin in Jerusalem, and any other tips for making sure he gets a kosher set?

    . . . בתמהון גדול קראתי במכתבו טעמו דפלוני להקושי בהנחת תפלין שאסור לאדם לפגוע בבעלי חיים – דמהי השייכות לנדו"ד?! – שהרי תפלין נעשות (גם) מעורות בהמות שמתו מאליהן (עיין שבת קח, סע"א). ואדרבא, לשיטת הנ"ל – הרי תחת להניח עור הבהמה לרקבון ואיבוד או לעשות ממנה נעלים כלי תשמיש ולרגלי האדם או כיו"ב –

    עליו המצוה – לעשות מהעור דבר שיעלה את האדם ויקדשנו וגם יחבשנו "פאר לראשו" כלשון הכתוב. ובפרט ע"פ המבואר בקבלה ובחסידות – הנעשה ע"י מצות תפלין בכל העולמות (ראה קו"א ד"ה דוד זמירות ק"ל. ובכ"מ).

    כלשון הכתוב: ראה יחזקאל כד, יז. ברכות יא, א. וש"נ.
    ק"ל: קרית להו (תניא קס, סע"א ואילך).

    I have heard that there are proprietors of "vegetarian tefillin", wheth they davka take from neveilos. Perhaps try looking into those? thanks

Possibly, as said here before, because in the olden days ink was always  מן המותר בפיך and the question was never raised. It was probably self-evident. The forum is back online...for reference and research purposes.

 Dear Readers and Members, The forum has been down for over 6 months because the domain name (www.stamforum.com) lapsed and it is no longer available to re purchase. Although this forum is now defunct (it has morphed into several whatsapp groups), I have had many requests to put it back online because it contains so much information (over 1,800 posts and thousands of comments in the discussions, on a wide range of topics related to STa"M). I have therefore put the forum back online at blogger, so the address is www.stamforum.blogspot.com. The forum lasted for a decade...not a bad effort! It was pretty popular back in the days before whatsapp and managed to receive over a million hits in it's short life. It was one of the only organised forums in the  STa"M world and definitely the largest in it's heyday.
