Tiyug lishma

Is it necessary or just a nice thing for a metayeg to do?

What about tiyug of Shaimos?

Yerios Shlomo chelek 4 page 362 says it's a good thing to do.

Many times when making tagin, the metayeg doesn't stop at the edge of the letter but continues into the head. On a Shatnez getz letter, if this is done with all 3 tagin, a good part, if not the majority of the head, can be covered by this ink. If the metayeg doesn't do it lishma is there an issue?
I've just started to look into this but I've heard from one posek that as long as if the part of the letter he's covered weren't there it'd still have a tzuras ois we could be maikil. (And even if not, one could be maavir kulmus lishma). I was told by a good metayeg that a posek told him that since the letter was already complete and mekudash and his ink isn't adding or detracting then it's fine.

Has anyone seen or heard from the poskim on this matter?

    Halacha Brura chelek 3 36:14 footnote 44 discusses my specific concern and he writes that its good to be machmir b/c ink may enter into the letters.

  2. The only time a lack of lishma is meakev (renders not kosher) ( obviously after the original writing is complete (which is done lishmah by the sofer) ), would be if someone fixed a crack or a broken letter without lishmoh.

    Tagin and other additions or corrections, even making letters closer, are ok if the sofer did not say leshaim.

    Even if he went over part of the letter in doing so, if the letter was kosher and complete prior to the repair the new ink (not lishma) would not make it possul.

    But i guess its always good to say anyway...

  3. As I mentioned, one of the poskim that I spoke to feels it's a serious issue but this was his initial reaction. The one source I've seen so far in writing that addresses this specific issue, Halachah Brurah, says tov lehachmir b/c of it. Bli neder I'll share an additional sources I come across.

  4. Rav Mualem said that tiyug not lishma doesn't affect the hiddur. Nor is going into letters not lishma a concern.

  6. How is it possible to make tagim not lishmah? While obviously we prefer that the metayyeg make an oral declaration, strictly speaking if he is adding to an item of STaM that is already written there is clearly סתמא לשמה.

  7. No one is saying he's making tagin purposely not lishma and perhaps stama lishma may work bedieved. We're talking about what should be done lechatchila/is the hiddur affected.

    1. In addition, right handed metaygim work from the left side of the column to the right side and often don't notice that they're putting tagin on shaimos.
      If he at least is mekadesh Hashem b'machashava at each Shem, as long as he orally expressed at the outset lshem kedushas ST or whatever he is being metayeg, (and even better if he also was mekadesh the Azkaros, it's better but it's still not the lechatchila way to do it.
